The Textile Museum of Prato presents: SNEAKER REVOLUTION

Sneaker by Beatrice Brandini

On November 6, 2026, an exhibition titled *SNEAKER REVOLUTION* will open at the Textile Museum in Prato.

It will be the first exhibition in Italy dedicated entirely to the evolution of the sneaker—no longer merely an accessory, but a product capable of influencing the culture and lifestyles of entire generations, shaping and intersecting with sports and performance, as well as music and fashion.

Sneakers have firmly established themselves in our wardrobes and our collective imagination; while their creation originally served a utilitarian, athletic purpose, today they have become collector’s items—customized by major designers and brands and taking center stage on runways worldwide. In little more than a century, the sneaker has undergone a journey unlike that of any other type of footwear, driving a phenomenon that is at once mass-market, cultural, and social.

Technological research has reached new heights, yielding material innovations that ensure comfort, functionality, performance, and competitiveness. Sports brands compete to secure high-profile ambassadors who resonate emotionally; consequently, the sneaker is not just an athletic shoe but a powerful advertising vehicle capable of influencing masses of young people (and others) who identify with the shoe and feel a sense of belonging to something greater.

The exhibition will trace the evolution from early vulcanized rubber soles to the latest sneakers, showcasing incredible manufacturing processes and material experimentation.

Sneakers have become collector’s items and the stars of dedicated auctions, with winning bids reaching record-breaking figures. It will be fascinating to view models from private collectors and companies that have opened up their historical archives—such as Adidas, Gucci, Hogan/Tod’s, Prada, Superga, and Lotto.
