A Meeting of Art and Fashion: Stella and Koons

Stella di Beatrice Brandini

The American artist and the British designer are collaborating again, creating a humorous and allusive collection, not for everyone, but sure to become a must-have on Instagram.

Sweatshirts, T-shirts, tote bags, and small accessories become the ideal canvases for Koons’s iconic images, such as the work “Utitled (Girl with Dolphin and Monkey),” as well as for Stella’s irreverent slogans, such as the oft-quoted “Slippery When Wet,” taken from McCartney’s first collection in 2001.

Other pieces feature the iconic Poodles and Yorkshire Terriers, taken from Jeff Koons’s 1991 Made in Heaven series. Or the resized Rabbit sculpture, transformed into a platinum pendant, which now returns in the new pendant-shaped capsule collection.

The two creatives are linked by a long-standing friendship, united by shared passions, such as animals. They had already collaborated in the past; today the capsule collection takes on added significance, so much so that the Rabbit pendant will be available at the Gogosian Gallery in New York, one of the most prestigious art galleries in the world.

It’s no longer about buying a “simple” piece of clothing, but about owning an (almost) unique piece, about wearing an emotion. Prices are aligned with those of the brand; for example, a tank top costs €290 (the luxury version, the one signed by the artist, is around €1,090).

It’s a capsule collection that combines art and fashion, wearable art that, through its now iconic symbols (in this case a poodle, but it could have been a snake, or a man with white hair and a ponytail…), becomes glamorous and no longer takes itself too seriously.

This isn’t the first time art and fashion have met; I’ve already spoken about it extensively in recent years. But collaborations are becoming increasingly exclusive and for a select few.

Could this be the path to the future of luxury fashion?

The madness of vintage items at auction, like the Birkin bag that belonged to the woman who gave it its name for the absurd sum of €7 million, or the preciousness of a fabric or an extremely precious and artisanal workmanship, is no longer enough. Collaborations aimed at a very young target audience are needed, involving charismatic figures, not necessarily talented, whose valuations must be in the millions. Luckily if this is not the case!

Enjoy your life, everyone!

Beatrice
