On May 8, Jeff Pryor, musician and CEO of Pryor Products, a leading medical device manufacturer, will auction off a stunning and extraordinary collection of Chanel bags at the American auction house Heritage Auctions.

A great admirer of the late Karl Lagerfeld, considered by Pryor to be the most phenomenal designer ever, what began as a collection of special bags, for his wife Cheri, has become something of an obsession. In a short time, Pryor has collected the rarest and most stunning bags created by one of the most iconic luxury houses in the world, Chanel.

It all started with a rather serious illness, in which doctors diagnosed Pryor with an uncertain future. During a long hospital stay, Pryor was persuaded by a “shopping frenzy”, but instead of buying and collecting the most classic and famous Chanels, such as the legendary 2.55, he bought something unobtainable, bags made with the most unusual materials, such as lucite (a plastic material more transparent than glass), resin, crystals, feathers, creations in very limited editions, often designed only for the fashion show.

“Jeff’s collection is extraordinary, it is extremely rare to see so many minaudières (jewelry accessory)and such special runway pieces in one collection. It is truly spectacular and a testament to Jeff’s appreciation, understanding and sincere love of the craftsmanship, artistry and intricacy of Chanel.” Diane D’Amato, Director of Luxury Accessories at Heritage Auctions.

The bags up for auction, a total of 80 masterpieces, have been called the largest collection of Chanel bags in the world. Pryor said it was time to part with them so they could be admired, worn, flaunted and experienced by someone else.

The collection has allowed Jeff and his wife, Cheri, to branch out among collectors from all over the world, but most importantly, and by Pryon’s own admission, Chanel saved his life.

In a difficult moment, collecting these masterpieces has certainly helped and distracted him. In fact, I have always been absolutely convinced that having passions makes life more stimulating. As for collections, because no matter what your budget is, you could also collect simple cups or beer mugs, the research and adrenaline in finding a new piece that will expand your collection (passion), is priceless.

Big bag brands are recording record sales at auction, a Kelly at Artcurial was sold for $127,264, and a diamond-studded crocodile Birkin, sold at Christie’s, reached $300,000. Bags that increasingly resemble works of art, destined for the wives of magnates who, in an increasingly standardized and image-driven world, try to stand out (alas) even just through an accessory.

Good life to everyone!

Beatrice
