Fendi celebrates “the journey” with a tribute to Silvana Mangano, one of the most important actresses of Italian cinema, a true icon of elegance simple but sophisticated. Muse of artists like Monicelli, Pasolini, Visconti, interpreter of irresistible female figures that have characterized fifty years of the most beautiful Italian cinema.

Silvana Mangano was a great actress, perhaps owes her talent to the fact that not much she loved acting and above all the success and attention that goes with it. Probably for this reason her interpretations were unique, so natural and spontaneous. Her stage presence, her personality were immense, is that SHE was “the scene”. I’ve always loved her (how could it be otherwise ?!), for its beauty, for its elegance, but also for her melancholy, that despite some brilliant roles, has always been evident. Pasolini, who directed her in The Witches, Oedipus Rex and in Theorem, had grasped this aspect defining its beauty as a “bitter beauty”, a beauty that she never ostentatious, but rather made more “fragile” with an excessive thinness (against her nature of a woman wonderfully feminine), with the millions of cigarettes consumed and an emotion too vulnerable.

Became famous at eighteen interpreting Riso Amaro, Silvana Mangano seemed to hate her body that made her irresistible, her femininity disruptive did not like. If we think about it in fact, Mangano has nothing to do with the famous beauties very popular in those years, I talk about Silvana Pampanini for example, or Gina Lollobrigida. It was probably thanks to directors like Pasolini that Mangano became mysterious and elusive, an image of a refined beauty, almost abstract.

Fendi, collaborating with the daughter of Mangano, Veronica de Laurentis, has created a small collection of accessories consisting of trolley, bags, scarves … plus a beautiful silk trench coat inspired by the film “Conversation Piece in an internal” , by Luchino Visconti, in which the same Mangano, unforgettable protagonist, was dressed by Fendi. It was then that was born what we might call a kind of partnership, infact Mangano wore dresses and fur Fendi even off the set. A set of suitcases Parchment that her daughter lovingly still guards, in which there is a green ribbon (the Mangano linked it to the luggage to recognize, each bag of this new Fendi collection has a small charm that reminds this habit), maybe it was departure that inspired this beautiful new line.

Part of the proceeds of this collection will go to the Foundation Silvana Mangano non-profit organization created by Veronica de Laurentis, an association that helps women subjected to violence.

Pasolini wrote a heartfelt letter, almost justifying “evil” that had caused him making recite (wanting at all costs) in the film Teorema. The film was received lukewarm in Italy (rather abroad, as often happens, was much loved), but also was marked by fierce criticism both mortified (unfortunately for Pasolini was a custom that remained with him until his brutal death).

“It is the reality of your distance, like a sheet of glass between you and the world. Even without it we we never said (given the savage modesty), my soul was often with you, behind the glass. ” Pier Paolo Pasolini

To interpret the mondina Rice Amaro director Giuseppe De Santis auditioned a crowd of girls. At that audition were all rejected, including a Silvana Mangano aesthetically too excessive (the words of the director). Only later and by chance, he came across the acrettes through the streets of Rome. Mangano was disheveled, without makeup and with wet hair … that aspect simple, almost resigned, he struck De Santis who booked her immediately. That role has made she famous all over the world, consecrating as one of the most beautiful and sensual female images in film history.

Mangano won three David di Donatello and three Nastri d’argento.
